The Oswestry Multi-Feastival is being hosted on Friday 30 August 2013, 12pm midday until 4pm, at Cae Glas Park, Oswestry for young people to celebrate and display the diversity of different cultures around the world.

The Feastival is in effort of achieving a raised awareness of equality and diversity.  It will be themed around different cultural backgrounds with an emphasis on food and music, all of which will originate from different cultures.

Young people will be able to try out a selection of varied food from different countries, and music will be performed at the park by a selection of talented musicians.  There will also be an opportunity to have henna or glitter tattoos, and facepainting.

The event has been organised independently by young members of the National Citizen Service (NCS) branch based in Oswestry, which is supported by Shropshire Council’s positive activities team.  NCS is a Government-funded nationwide programme for 16- to 17-year-olds looking of an opportunity to broaden their horizons during their summer holidays.

Young people who sign up to the programme take part in two residential trips to push their emotional and physical boundaries, along with teambuilding and making friends, and then return in order to organise a social action project of their choice.

Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for children’s services – transformation and safeguarding, said:

“This is a great event organized by bright young 16- and 17-year-olds who are part of a fantastic programme.  The Feastival is great idea to get young people together, explore different cultures and give to charity.  I encourage everyone to attend.”

Keith Barrow, local Shropshire Councillor for Oswestry South, and Leader of Shropshire Council, added:

“This is a great idea for young people to experience a little of the different cultures and get together.  It’s really impressive to see the work these young people are doing in their community and what they can achieve with just a little support to improve their confidence, teambuilding and communication skills through a great programme.  I hope everyone has fun.”

Imogen Hawkes, one of the young people organising the event, also commented:

“Please come along to this fun event, it’s something for the whole family to enjoy.”

Profits made from the stalls will be donated to the Charlotte Hartey Foundation, which is a charitable foundation set up to give opportunities to young people to reach their full potential.
