Cabinet to consider review of parking charges in October

A review of parking charges in Shropshire Council car parks and on-street parking areas across the county is currently being carried out, with a report now due to be considered by Cabinet in October [2026] ahead of a public consultation.

The review will include how parking capacity is used and will aim to balance income generation with the objectives of Shropshire’s emerging Local Transport Plan, including encouraging sustainable travel choices and reducing congestion in town centres.

A report was initially planned to go to Cabinet in September. However, we recognise the importance of parking charges to the council, to local residents and businesses, and to visitors to our market towns, and we want to ensure we allow sufficient time to consider the range of options that will go out to consultation.

In November 2025 parking charges were increased following a three-year pause. These measures were introduced to bring Shropshire more closely in line with neighbouring areas and to help respond to the transport pressures placed on the council.

The transport funding that Shropshire Council receives from Government is not keeping pace with rising costs, so we must look at other sources of income to support stretched budgets and protect important transport services.
