Shropshire Council shortlisted for Internships national award

Shropshire Council has been shortlisted for a National Internship and Placement Award 2013; the only public sector organisation to be shortlisted.

In June 2012, 13 students and graduates started their work experience placements with the council, hoping to gain some valuable employability skills.

This was the first year of internships for Shropshire Council, offering students and graduates the chance to gain three months paid work experience and to gain an insight into a rapidly changing local government environment.  We wanted to support students and graduates and give them an opportunity to raise their career aspirations, increase their awareness of what a council does, and make us an employer of choice.

As a result of our successful first year of our Internship Programme, Shropshire Council has been shortlisted and is in the top 20 for an award at the National Internship and Placement Awards (NPIAs) 2013.   Sponsored by PwC, the NPIAs 2013 had over 300 nominations and the highly coveted shortlist for all of the 15 awards sparked debate among the judges.

The event in London on 15 February 2013, was attended by Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member, and Maggie Fobister, Shropshire Council’s people development manager.  The event was a great success with over 400 attendees from the world of undergraduate placements and internships being recognised for their outstanding achievements.

Tina Woodward said:

“I am delighted that Shropshire Council has been recognised at a national level for our fantastic Internship Programme.  We are committed to attracting and recruiting graduates into our organisation and supporting them to become our future leaders.”
