Update on the new Renters’ Rights Act
Shropshire Council would like to share an update regarding the recent substantial changes introduced by the new Renters’ Rights Act 2025 and how these will shape enforcement approaches at the Council.
After a careful review of the Act’s requirements, alongside guidance and new developed model enforcement polices, the council is seeking to adopt the policies to ensure it remains compliant and effective in its responsibilities.
The council’s goal is to maintain policies that are current and adaptable as the Renter’s Rights Act continues to evolve. This means we are committed to ongoing refinement, allowing for timely amendments as needed.
Throughout this process, we are focused on maintaining robust member oversight, ensuring local considerations, service collaboration and reinforcing both accountability and transparency for everyone impacted by these policies and the Act itself.
James Owen, portfolio holder for housing, said:
“ The policies strengthen the use of enforcement tools within the Act, providing tenant and landlord protections.
We are taking a measured and transparent approach, ensuring that our methods are not only locally accountable but also embedded within a clear, structured process for implementation and oversight.
A key focus is cross Council collaboration which ensures prevention and working with our residents.”
