Shropshire Council to launch public consultation on future transport plan

Related topics: Highways, transport and environmental maintenance

Shropshire Council is set to launch a public consultation this September inviting residents, businesses and stakeholders to help shape the future of transport across the county.

The consultation – approved by the council’s Cabinet today (10 June 2026) – will focus on the draft Local Transport Plan (LTP) 2027–2037, which sets out a long-term strategy for managing, maintaining and improving Shropshire’s highways and transport network.

A programme of engagement activities will now be carried out this summer before a six-week consultation begins in September 2026. More information will be announced in the next few weeks.

The Local Transport Plan is a statutory requirement under the Transport Act 2000 and is a key document in securing future government funding for transport and infrastructure improvements.  The new plan will guide how people and goods move around the county up to 2037, supporting economic growth, improving connectivity, and helping to create healthier and more sustainable communities.

The draft LTP includes a wide range of action areas such as road safety, public transport, rural accessibility, freight and logistics, network/asset management, highways maintenance, and climate resilience.

Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and regeneration, said:

“This is a really important opportunity for people across Shropshire to have their say on how we plan and deliver transport in the years ahead. The consultation will give people across Shropshire the opportunity to share their views and help shape the final plan.

“Our communities are different, from rural villages to our market towns, and we want to make sure the Local Transport Plan reflects those needs. Feedback will help shape a plan that supports safer journeys, better connectivity and improved choices for everyone.”

Feedback gathered during the consultation will be analysed and used to refine the plan, with a final version expected to be presented to the council for approval in early 2027.

The Local Transport Plan will play a crucial role in attracting investment, linking directly to how central government funding for transport is allocated. A robust Local Transport Plan is also a  key document to support the Local Plan process which has just started. Without an adopted plan, the council risks reduced funding for local transport improvements and infrastructure projects.
