Choose what you’ll use during Food Waste Action Week

As part of our approach to reduce waste in Shropshire we are again participating in the national Food Waste Action Week (Monday 18 March to Sunday 24 March 2024) – a week of action to help everyone save time, money and reduce food waste by making smarter food choices.

This year the theme is ‘choose what you’ll use’, highlighting the benefits to the environment of buying fruit and vegetables loose and free of packaging, and inspiring people to do this when they shop to avoid food being wasted.

WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme) research has shown that buying produce loose reduces food waste. If all apples, bananas and potatoes were sold loose, we could save 60,000 tonnes of food waste by enabling people to buy the quantity they know they will consume at its best.

This year, the annual campaign, run by Love Food Hate Waste, will be working across the food sector, the media and partner organisations, to raise awareness and help people take action through small and easy changes to reduce their food waste.

Ian Nellins, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for climate change, environment and transport, said:-

‘’Food waste feeds climate change, and we can all make small and easy changes to how we purchase, store and use food to avoid it becoming wasted. These changes will save you time and money and be kinder on the environment.’’

In Shropshire we are working with a number of partners such as the Shrewsbury Food Hub, Shropshire Master Composters, Shropshire Good Food Partnership and Veolia to reduce food waste.
