Shropshire residents are being urged to think local and give the county’s economy a multi-million pound boost as restrictions from the third Lockdown are further eased.

Following a very difficult year for the county’s businesses, Shropshire Council is today urging people to Think. Eat. Stay Local – and give traders a real boost ahead of summer.

Restrictions from the third Lockdown are due to ease further next Monday (17 May 2021), with pubs, restaurants, bars and cafes allowed to serve customers indoors; museums, theatres and cinemas opening; and hotels and B&Bs opening to tourists.

We are urging people to spend their money with local businesses.

Research shows that if every adult in Shropshire spent £3.80 a week in local shops rather than with international retailers online, it would boost the local economy by a massive £1 million a week.

Tracy Darke, Shropshire council’s assistant director for economy and place, said:

“There is no doubt that the last 14 months has been extremely difficult for all businesses and as a council we have shown we are here to offer our full support.

“In addition to handing out more than £150 million of business grants, we are now once again urging people to think local – and support Shropshire businesses as they aim to get back on their feet.

“Traditionally, summer is a busy time of year for our hospitality industry and of course our culture, leisure and tourism offerings, so easing of lockdown measures is the perfect chance to show some support.

“We are also urging businesses to let us know they are open via our social media, so we can see the full range of wonderful talented traders we have in the county.

“However, we want to emphasise the best way to do this is in line with Government advice.

“Remember to wear face coverings where required, adhere to social distancing requirements, and leave your details when dining or drinking out.”
