Danielle Mellows from Macmillan Cancer said:-

“The team encourages anyone with worries or concerns relating to cancer to stop by, whether you’re living with or beyond cancer, or are a carer or loved one of someone who is. Whether you want to know what symptoms to look out for, need information about managing the side effects of your treatment, or want to find local support for carers, come along and see us. We’d be happy to help. If you are unable to visit us but have questions about cancer, visit www.macmillan.org.uk or call Macmillan free on 0808 808 00 00 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm).”

All libraries in Shropshire provide access to accredited health information and support through the national Reading Well scheme, offering books specifically designed to help people manage long term health problems, mental health and dementia. Regular drop-in events with health professionals, such as hearing aid clinics, also take place in some branches and library staff are also working in partnership with local hospitals to provide improved access to useful resources.

Lezley Picton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture and leisure, said:-

“Health Information Week is the perfect time to find out how Shropshire’s libraries can help local people feel better. Our libraries support health literacy and self-management, provide health-related events and activities, stimulate creativity and learning and connect individuals and communities. There is a special focus on cancer support this year and I’d encourage people to call in at the Macmillan Cancer drop-in information events scheduled at several branches to provide advice and support.”
