Soulton Bridge, near Wem – update, 13 November 2017

Related topics: Highways, transport and environmental maintenance

On Thursday 9 November 2017 an HGV came off Soulton Bridge on the B5065 Soulton Road, between Wem and the A49. The HGV landed on its side in the brook, causing significant damage to the bridge, which is a Grade II listed structure. (see picture below).

The road was temporarily closed and was reopened on Thursday night under two-way traffic lights.

The HGV was successfully recovered on Saturday morning (11 November) and the road was re-opened at around 2.30pm on Saturday.  The two-way traffic lights will need to remain in place until the permanent repairs to the bridge can be undertaken.

Due to the Listed status of the bridge all permanent repair works will need to be agreed with Shropshire Council’s Historic Environment team. Works are unlikely to carried out before spring 2018 as the type of material likely to be used in the repair cannot be used in cold weather.
