Get advice on saving energy, and money, at Shirehall this Friday

A special energy-saving event is being held at Shirehall in Shrewsbury this Friday (22 September) from 10am to 2pm, to offer people tips and advice about saving energy, making their homes more energy-efficient, and saving money on their energy bills.

The event – to be held outside the council chamber – is being run by Shropshire Council and its energy partner SSE, who together launched the new Shropshire Community Energy tariff in April 2017. The Shropshire tariff is 5% cheaper than SSE’s standard variable tariff and is exclusively available to Shropshire residents, Shropshire Council staff and those working for the council’s partner organisations.

An important aim of Shropshire Council’s partnership with SSE is to provide people with tips and advice about how they could save energy and money.

At the event people will be able to :

  • Find out more about the Shropshire tariff and how to switch, plus advice about how they can reduce their energy use, and save money as a result.
  • Speak to SSE advisers, who will be on hand to offer one-to-one advice about energy efficiency, SMART meters, and more.
  • Call the SSE helpline and find out if you could save money on their bills by switching (people should make sure they bring their most recent energy bill so that they can discuss it with an adviser).
  • See how much heat is being lost through their roof using a thermal map (see further information below) – and find ways to increase their home energy efficiency and save money on fuel bills.
  • Take home some SSE freebies!

Nic Laurens, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for economic growth, said:

“This special event aims to give people lots of tips and advice on how they can save energy, and money, and I encourage everyone to come along and find out more.
“There’ll be a chance to speak to experts from SSE and Shropshire Council about how to cut down on your energy use, and save money as a result.
“There’ll also be an opportunity to find out more about the Shropshire Community energy tariff and to call SSE to carry out a price comparison. You never know, a short phone call could end up saving you money on your bills.”

It’s hoped to hold similar events in other parts of the county later in the year.

The night time thermal imaging project is helping Shropshire Council improve energy efficiency and affordable warmth levels for residents and businesses across the county.

Maps have been produced for seven market towns and surrounding areas within Shropshire, including: Shrewsbury (including Bayston Hill), Oswestry, Wem, Market Drayton, Bishops Castle, Bridgnorth and Church Stretton (including Little Stretton). The maps show how much heat is being lost from a building. The map below shows the area surrounding Shirehall in Shrewsbury.
