A seminar at University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) on Wednesday 1 February 2017 will explore the complex relationship between man and mountain.

The keynote speaker is Dr Rob Casserley, who has climbed Mount Everest no fewer than eight times. Dr Casserley runs a successful expedition company that aims to help people overcome personal challenges as they explore treacherous terrain.

Dr Casserley’s talk will also reveal though video and photography some of the amazing physical features of the world’s tallest mountain, as well as outlining how he and his partner, Dr Marie-Kristelle Ross, helped the region’s people with regeneration projects after the devastating earthquake of 2015.

The event also features a talk entitled “How Do We Know Everest is the Highest?” by geospatial engineer Jonathan Walton of the British Antarctic Survey, and an exploration of the effects of altitude on the brain, breathing and the heart by Dr Ross, a cardiologist based in Quebec.

The event is presented in association with the Active Living Lab at University Centre Shrewsbury and will be introduced by UCS’ Professor of Applied Exercise Science, Prof. John Buckley. It starts at 6.30pm at the Guildhall in Shrewsbury and attendance is free of charge.
