Llanyblodwel Bridge closure on Tuesday 7 February 2017

Llanyblodwel Bridge will be closed for one day on Tuesday 7 February 2017 between the hours of 9am and 4pm to enable an inspection to be undertaken.

The bridge carries Station Road over the River Tanat.

The bridge must be closed to traffic while this inspection is being carried out as access equipment will be positioned on the road, and it is too narrow for the work to be carried out safely with the bridge open to traffic.

When the road is closed, traffic will be diverted along other local routes.

Access for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available at the bridge throughout the work.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transportation, said:

“It is appreciated that the bridge closure will cause some inconvenience, and everyone involved will do all that they reasonably can to reopen it as soon as possible.”

Arthur Walpole, local Shropshire Councillor for Llanymynech, said:-

“The bridge is a unique listed structure spanning the River Tanat in the centre of the village. It carries water down off the Welsh hills joining the River Vyrnwy close by and on from there to join the River Severn at Melverley.

“It is important that the structure is able to withstand strong flows of water and that the flow is maintained at times of severe rainfall. Extensive work was carried out to reinforce the bridge in the recent past, together with additional works on the parapet which because of its narrowness is subject to damage from vehicular traffic.

“I am sure that the local people understand the need for periodic inspection to ensure the safety of the bridge and will accept the inconvenience, so long as they are kept fully informed by local signage.”
