Shropshire Archives achieves national accreditation

Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives has been awarded Archive Service Accreditation, the UK quality standard which recognises good performance in all areas of archive service delivery.

Achieving accredited status demonstrates that Shropshire Archives has met clearly defined national standards relating to management and resourcing, the care of its unique collections and what the service offers to its entire range of users.

Shropshire Archives provides archive services across the historic county of Shropshire, including Telford and Wrekin. The service looks after over five and a half miles (nine kilometres) of manuscripts, books, photographs and maps which tell the fascinating story of the history of Shropshire and its people.

Stuart West, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said:-

“I am delighted that the high quality services provided by Shropshire Archives have been confirmed with the award of Archive Accreditation. The value of the service has always been recognized within the county, and it is great to see this acknowledged by the National Archives.”

The Archive Service Accreditation Panel congratulated the Archives team on “continuing to deliver such a positive service in challenging circumstances and in balancing a range of ways of accessing the collections, beyond the traditional searchroom”.

Mary McKenzie, team leader at Shropshire Archives, said:

‘The award of Archives Accreditation is a tribute to all the hard work and commitment shown both by staff and volunteers at Shropshire Archives. We look forward to building on this success in the future.’
