Shrewsbury College students carry out clean-up and repaint of Monkmoor underpass

Twenty-eight students from Shrewsbury College have helped Team Shrewsbury to repaint the Crowmere Road underpass in Monkmoor, Shrewsbury – something which will help to increase safety and reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.

The work was carried out on Thursday 13 October and follows complaints from local residents that anti-social activity was taking place in the underpass.

Officers from Shropshire Council’s safer neighbourhoods, street scene, public protection and community enablement teams – all members of Team Shrewsbury – put together an action plan for improvement in the area.

One priority was to repaint the underpass to lighten the thoroughfare and improve its appearance.

Steve Cunningham, community enablement officer with Shropshire Council, contacted Shrewsbury College to ask if they would be interested in helping with a community clean-up and a repainting of the underpass. The Public Uniformed Services course leaders showed immediate interest and 28 students volunteered to undertake the project in just one day.

Steve said:

“This is fantastic achievement by these students and I can’t thank them enough for their fantastic efforts to improve the appearance and safety of this underpass.”

Pam Moseley, Shropshire Councillor for Monkmoor, said:

“The students have done a great painting job which, with improved lighting, will encourage residents to use the underpass, rather than Crowmere roundabout to cross the road. Thanks to the students, their tutors, and Team Shrewsbury who pulled this project together.”

Miles Kenny, Shropshire Councillor for Underdale, said:

“Who says the youth of today are aimless? The well-motivated students from SCAT did a good job with the painting. Let’s hope their example can be followed by others in the long overdue tidying up of overgrown vegetation and damaged fences in the vicinity, which is so bad that footpaths are not safe to use.”
