Academics from across Australia, Wales and England will join with University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) tutors to launch their new book which provides an introduction to mental health at each stage of life.

The publishing of Mental Health Across the Lifespan will be celebrated at a free event on Tuesday 8 March 2016, held in partnership with Routledge Publishers at UCS’ learning and research base.

People are invited to Guildhall in Frankwell Quay to hear from seven of the authors who have contributed to the book, representing a diverse range of expertise.

The authors include Professors Mary Steen and Nicholas Procter from the University of South Australia.

Also offering a short presentation of their chapter and subject area are: Professor Ben Green from UCS and the University of Chester (UoC); Scott Steen, UCS Residential Tutor and UoC PhD Candidate; Richard Mottershead from the UoC; Alison Owen-Traynor from Bangor University and Professor Andrew Lovell from the UoC.

The launch of the book, which is designed to provide an easily-accessible and engagingly-written introduction to mental health, takes place from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

Scott Steen said:

“Mental well-being is an integral part of being, and feeling healthy. It is estimated that one in four people will suffer from some form of mental illness during their lifetime. In spite of this, it is often overlooked in mainstream healthcare.

“The overall aim of this book is to provide knowledge and understanding of how mental health affects individuals, from conception through to the end of our lives, and the challenges that society as a whole has to address in the treatment of poor mental health.

“We warmly invite people to celebrate the launch of this book with us, and share in an evening which promises to be exciting, informative and highly-engaging.”

The topics covered in the book include: historical, social and cultural issues; mental health promotion; mental health during pregnancy and early parenthood, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and finally in older people.

It not only seeks to engage professionals working within mental health care, but also act as a useful reference for doctors, nurses, midwives, health visitors, allied health professionals, and health and social care support workers who have no specialist mental health training but often work in partnership with, and care for, people suffering from mental health issues.

Light refreshments will be provided at the book launch while the book will be available to buy at a discounted price and prize draws will be held during the evening.
