News from Team Shrewsbury

Team Shrewsbury, a partnership of groups and organisations which aims to make the town an even better place to live, work and visit, is celebrating its most recent success.

Inspector Graham Preece from West Mercia Police, explained:

“St Alkmund’s Churchyard in Shrewsbury has been the focus of some anti-social behaviour over recent months ranging from noise, rowdy behaviour, to drug use. Through Team Shrewsbury, organisations have worked together far more responsively to tackle these issues, culminating in the identification of a person responsible for damage to windows at St Alkmund’s Church, earlier this week.

“We hold weekly meetings of operational staff across the participating organisations who share information and intelligence on key issues and individuals, backed up by our CCTV and radio schemes. This provides instant intelligence on issues as they take place, enabling the appropriate organisation to respond.”

Helen Ball, Shrewsbury Town Council’s Town Clerk, added:

“What we have with Team Shrewsbury is a way of working that is bringing about some really pleasing results, and as such, is attracting interest from lots of other areas across the country. It is very simple in its form, but often organisational differences get in the way of getting things done; this model is getting over these historic issues.”

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for highways and transport, said:

“It’s great to see that Team Shrewsbury is now really starting to bring about results, which together make the town a more pleasant place in which to work, live and visit. We look forward to building on this success.”

Andrew Bannerman, local Shropshire Councillor for Quarry and Coton Hill, added:

“This is a great example of how Team Shrewsbury is starting to transform the town by tackling problems through a cross-agency approach. The toughest nuts to crack are those which slip between agencies, and undoubtedly the issues we’ve faced at St Alkmund’s would have fallen into this category before the formation of Team Shrewsbury.”

The partnership includes representatives of several organisations in the town, including Shropshire Council, Shrewsbury Town Council, West Mercia Police, Shrewsbury BID, Safer Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury Street Pastors and Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service.
