The ninth annual Bridgnorth History Week will be held at Bridgnorth Library from Monday 22 September to Saturday 27 September 2014.  The event celebrates the wealth of history in the Bridgnorth area, and engages with people to encourage them to find out more about their local and family history.

This year’s programme of events focuses on World War I, with a blend of talks, drop-in sessions, poetry workshop, themed walk, quiz, poppy trail and exhibition.

Discover Bridgnorth heroes and characters on a guided walk of Bridgnorth cemetery, listen to a range of talks from local authors who will bring the events of 100 years ago to life, and the local history volunteers will be on hand throughout the week to give advice on researching local and family history.

An exhibition and poppy trail will be on display during the week, showcasing research by the local history volunteers and work by local crafters.  A medal specialist will be able to give advice and value British military medals, and poet and performer Jonny Fluffypunk rounds off the week of events with an invitation to beginners and keen writers alike to be inspired by his poetry workshop, supported by Poetry on Loan.

Emma Spenser, branch manager, said:

“We are thrilled to present our ninth annual Bridgnorth History Week.  Our local history centre volunteers have worked hard to research material for our exhibition for this poignant World War I commemoration; this, coupled with our diverse programme of events, promises to be an interesting and exciting week at Bridgnorth Library.”

Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, libraries and culture, said:

“This annual event gives local people and visitors a chance to take a look into the rich history of this part of Shropshire.  I would like to personally thank the local history centre volunteers who will be on hand that week to guide you through all the information available.”
