Harlescott ‘Day of Action’ today

Related topics: Community

Harlescott, Shrewsbury residents are attending a Day of Action event in the area in a bid to help tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and enhance their local neighbourhood.

The event today (Wednesday 21 May 2014), Harlescott will be the first of four areas in Shrewsbury to be part of a Day of Action.  A Day of Action is an idea that was initiated by the Shrewsbury Crime & Disorder Partnership, Bronze Level Tasking, which meets on a monthly basis to work jointly on solutions to crime and anti-social behaviour across the town.

The concept behind a Day of Action is that Shropshire Council and its partners like West Mercia Police, Severnside Housing Association, and Shrewsbury Town Council work together on one day, in a high profile and highly visible way, to make a positive impact on the community.  Actions taking place today include traffic enforcement,  a waste amnesty, an estate tidy up, and crime prevention talks in a school and the community.

Inspector Graham Preece, Bronze Level Tasking Chair, said:

“The Day of Action is about working in partnership to address community safety issues within areas and streets of Shrewsbury.  It is a rolling program that will move on to a different Safer Neighbourhood Team area every two months.  Eventually, an event will have been held in each of the areas across Shrewsbury and central Shropshire.

“A lot of time and planning has gone into this first event to ensure that the partnership maximises its impact.  There was a street briefing at 10am at Kynaston Road Community Centre as the day begins.  Activities are continuing throughout the day and evening.

“Senior representatives of each agency involved will also take part in a web chat starting at 6.30pm, and I would actively encourage residents of Harlescott and the wider area of central Shropshire to engage with us.

“Local residents also have the opportunity to speak to statutory and voluntary sector organisations about issues and initiatives in their neighbourhood, by dropping into the Kynaston Road Community Centre between 11am and 3pm.”

Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsibile for community enablement, said:

“Day of Action events are all about community engagement and working with local people to help make their communities safer and vibrant places to live.  I really encourage residents to join the Day of Action and get involved.”

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for public protection, added:

“We know crime and anti-social behaviour can have an impact on how safe and secure people feel and, as a partnership, we are committed to tackling it.  Day of Action events are one of a number of ongoing measures and initiatives we support to identify and help tackle such issues in local communities.  This is a great opportunity for residents in Harlescott to speak to a range of partners about any issues they have, and an opportunity for them to help make a positive difference in their communities.”
