Tern Hill No 1 Bridge strengthening work

Related topics: Community

Work to strengthen Tern Hill No 1 Bridge, which carries the A41 road over the River Tern approximately 400 metres south of Tern Hill Roundabout, is scheduled to start in June 2014.

The bridge is made up of four large diameter corrugated steel pipes. The river flows through the two central ones, whilst the other two are for flood relief purposes only.

Routine bridge inspections have found that, in localised areas, the existing corrugated steel pipes have corroded significantly. Therefore, to ensure that the bridge will continue to be structurally sound in the long term, it is proposed to strengthen these corroded parts by installing structural liners inside the existing pipes.

The proposed work is scheduled to start on Monday 2 June 2014, and it is estimated that it will take approximately four months to complete.

Because the strengthening work has been designed to be carried out from inside the existing pipes, the work’s impact on traffic using the A41 road should be limited to traffic lights being in place on occasional days.

Claire Wild, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for bridge maintenance, said:

‘‘I am pleased that it has been possible to design a strengthening solution which can be built with minimal impact on road traffic.”
