Rectory Wood and Field in Church Stretton: public meeting

Related topics: Leisure, culture and heritage

Rectory Wood and Field is a 10-hectare public open space in Church Stretton that is managed by Shropshire Council’s outdoor recreation service.

The future management of the site will be discussed at a public meeting on Monday 24 March 2014 at the Silvester Horne Institute in Church Stretton at 7.30pm.

The evening will begin with a presentation about the fascinating history and wildlife of Rectory Wood and Field, and the importance of the site as a public recreation area.  This will be the first of several meetings that will be held this year.  The aim is to begin a process of consultation in order to develop a sustainable funding model for the site, and gather ideas and feedback from local people.

Lee Chapman, a local Shropshire Councillor for Church Stretton and Craven Arms, said:-

“I would urge everyone to attend this meeting and discover more about this wonderful site in the heart of Church Stretton.  Rectory Wood and Field is a fantastic resource for local people and tourists alike.  I hope that the meeting will stimulate some interesting discussion on the future management of the site.”

Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, libraries and culture, said:

“Shropshire Council is looking for new ways of working with community groups and other organisations to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of assets like Rectory Wood and Field.  This is the first stage in the consultation process and will provide a useful introduction to the site and its value.”
