Can you help a young person on their journey to independence?

People with a spare room are being urged to consider giving a home to teenagers who are taking their first steps towards independence.

The ‘Supported Lodgings’ scheme gives young people support to develop the skills and confidence needed to move into independent living.

People who join the scheme provide a spare room and meals for each young person, but also support and assistance – to make a difference.

Some of the young people placed in Supported Lodgings will have been living in or leaving care.  Some may have been homeless, or at risk of homelessness.  They will all be 16 or older, and encouraged and expected to be engaged in, or actively seeking education, training or employment.

Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for children’s services – transformation and safeguarding, said:

“Supported Lodgings providers come from many walks of life, and it’s a wonderful way to really make a difference to someone’s life.

“It doesn’t matter whether you are married, single, co-habiting, or what cultural and ethnic background you’re from, the important thing is to have plenty of patience, energy and a sense of humour.

“There are no upper age limits. The role can be demanding both physically and emotionally, but also incredibly rewarding.  I would encourage anyone with an interest to get in touch for a chat.”

The scheme is administered by Shropshire Council and all Supported Lodgings providers are given ongoing training and support, and a weekly allowance of £195.
