A new mobile speed enforcement site is being launched by West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership on Mill Street in Bridgnorth, following concerns raised by the community about the excessive speeds being driven by motorists along the 30mph road.

The new site – which launches later in March 2013 – forms part of the Safer Roads Partnership’s Community Concern programme, which responds to community requests for speed enforcement.  Local residents raised their concerns through Shropshire Council, who brought it to the attention of the Partnership and asked for action to be taken to address the situation and improve the safety of the 30mph road.

Anna Higgins, Communications Manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said:

“The speed data we collected in the area highlighted a significant speed compliance problem; almost half of all drivers (44%) are exceeding the speed limit and 15% of vehicles are travelling above 39.2mph.  With a popular park and a children’s playground on Mill Street, residents are understandably concerned about the excessive speed of some vehicles in an area with a high number of pedestrians.  We hope the new speed enforcement site will change driver behaviour and slow traffic down, therefore improving the safety of the road for all those who use it.”

Alice Dilly, Shropshire Council’s principal engineer, said:

“We are very pleased to see this mobile enforcement site come into use, and hope that this will address the concerns of residents and reduce vehicle speeds significantly.”

Speed data will be collected while the enforcement site is in place to assess the impact upon traffic speed and driver behaviour.

The Safer Roads Partnership is part of West Mercia Police and works in partnership with the four local highway authorities in West Mercia (Herefordshire Council, Shropshire Council, Telford and Wrekin Council and Worcestershire County Council); the Highways Agency; HM Courts Service – West Mercia; the two Fire & Rescue Services for Hereford & Worcester and Shropshire; and West Mercia Cluster of Primary Care Trusts.
