A sea of smiling faces and flags greeted the Olympic Torch Relay as it stopped off in Ludlow, Clee Hill and Cleobury Mortimer on its 8,000-mile journey around Britain today (Thursday 24 May 2012).

For the thousands of people lining the streets, including approximately 4,700 schoolpupils, and the privileged few who carried the Olympic Flame, it was a day that will live long in the memory.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for active and healthy lifestyles, said:

“It’s been a truly fantastic day and I’m delighted so many communities were able enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“We are pleased that our first experience of the Olympic Torch Relay in Shropshire was a success and that we have helped to provide an appetiser, getting people in the mood for this summer’s Olympic Games.”

The council is reminding people that the Torch also travels through the county on Wednesday 30 May 2012 when it will visit Oswestry, Pant, Llanymynech, Shrewsbury, Cressage, Much Wenlock, Benthall and Broseley.
