Improvements planned for London Road in Shrewsbury

Related topics: Community

Shropshire Council is inviting people who live or work in Shrewsbury, and students at Shrewsbury College, to give their views on proposed improvements on London Road, between the college and the Column roundabout.

The proposals include road surfacing, new zebra crossings outside Shirehall and Shrewsbury College, wider pavements and shared use facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

People can see detailed plans at a public exhibition at Shirehall in Shrewsbury on Tuesday 24 April 2012, 12.30pm to 6.30pm, when Shropshire Council staff will be on hand to discuss the proposals.

The plans will then be available to view at Shirehall until 25 May 2012.  They are also available, along with a feedback form, on the Cycle Shrewsbury website here

Students at Shrewsbury College are also being asked for their feedback.

All comments must be submitted by Friday 25 May 2012.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for transport, said:

“London Road is a key access route for Shrewsbury College, Prestfelde School, Shirehall and Shrewsbury Business Park, and for people travelling into or out of Shrewsbury.

“The London Road enhancement scheme has been developed in response to the deterioration of the road surface, and concerns about the lack of safe crossing points and facilities for walking and cycling.  I hope people will take a look at the proposals and let us know what they think.”

If the scheme is supported, the zebra crossing and maintenance work near the college could be carried out this summer.  Other measures near the Column roundabout could be implemented in 2013.

The work is expected to cost around £300,000 for the whole scheme.  The majority of work would be funded from external grants, including the £4.99m awarded to Shropshire Council last year from the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

London Road is a key access route to: Shrewsbury College (with over 5,000 part-time and full-time students); Prestfelde Preparatory School (250 pupils); Shirehall (approximately 1,000 staff); and Shrewsbury Business Park (1,000 staff at over 40 different businesses).

Local Sustainable Transport Fund

In July 2011 the Department for Transport announced that it will award Shropshire Council £4.99 million.  The money must be spent over the period 2011-15 on sustainable transport measures which meet the objectives of supporting and boosting the local economy, and cutting carbon emissions.
