A Shropshire Council children’s home near Shrewsbury is celebrating after it was rated ‘Outstanding’ in a positive report by Government inspectors Ofsted.

The report published this week on Chelmaren children’s home was judged to be outstanding, giving top marks to all areas including, outcomes, quality of care, safeguarding and leadership and management.  It was also noted to be good in its equality and diversity practice.

All children’s homes are regularly inspected by Ofsted.  Inspections are designed to assure children and young people, parents, the public, councils and the Government of the quality and standard of the service provided.  Inspections are graded from ‘Outstanding’ to ‘Inadequate’.  Receiving an ‘Outstanding’ rating at inspection signifies a service that significantly exceeds minimum requirements and demonstrates that homes are providing the highest levels of quality care and represents real dedication from the staff teams.

Commenting on the overall standard of the home, the report noted that: “This is an outstanding service that positively impacts on young people’s lives.  The key strengths of this service are the staff.  They are enthusiastic, trained to a high standard and understand the complex needs of young people well.  The effectiveness with which the home provides personalised care is excellent and takes full account of the individual needs of each young person, whilst promoting positive outcomes for all young people.”

The inspector also stated that, “The utmost priority is given to helping young people develop a sense of self-worth to help them face everyday challenges” and that, “the staff work exceptionally hard to ensure young people receive effective assessment, healthcare, and support to reflect their individual needs.”

The report documented that the home provided “Proactive and imaginative support, provides young people with every opportunity to develop and achieve physically, emotionally, educationally and spiritually.”

It concluded that “Young people describe the home as ‘Brilliant’ and that they, ‘hold their quality of care in high regard’ and, ‘there is a wonderful rapport between young people and staff that is trusting and sincere.”

Councillor Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council Cabinet member for health and well-being, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to have such a positive response from Ofsted, which truly recognises our strong commitment to ensure the safety and well-being of the children and young people we support.  This is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff.  Everyone should be very proud of this fantastic accolade.”
