Shropshire Archives appeal success

Customers at Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives service can now use a high-tech digital magnifier to help with their research.

Following an appeal by customers and supporters of Shropshire Archives, generous donations from the public have raised over £350 to purchase the electronic magnifier.

The magnifier is hand-held and can magnify text up to 14 times in a variety of colour combinations, replacing the traditional magnifying glass.

The appeal’s success means that it will help to improve access for all to the wealth of original documents held at Shropshire Archives.  Many of the records are faded or damaged with age, and the magnifier can make a huge difference to what can be read. Customers at the archives can ask the staff to demonstrate the magnifier if they feel it would be of help to them.

Councillor Mike Owen, Cabinet member for economic growth and prosperity said:

“We are most appreciative of the generosity of the customers at Shropshire Archives in enabling us to purchase this item, and are particularly grateful to Dr Hamm of Castletown, Isle of Man, for his most generous support.”
