Church Stretton Library celebration day this Sunday

Shropshire Council’s Church Stretton Library and the Church Stretton Area Local History Group are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the old school building, which is now the library, with a free exhibition on Sunday 16 October 2011.

Church Stretton National school was opened in 1861 with space for 144 pupils.  The school remained on the site, becoming a primary school, until new premises were completed with the modern secondary school, on Shrewsbury Road in 1968.  Following this move, the library opened in the school premises, where it has remained to this day.

Members of the Church Stretton Area Local History Group have been looking into the history of the school, and of education, in Church Stretton.  This work has included interviewing former pupils and teachers, as well as researching using archival records and photographs.  The results of all this work will be seen in the exhibition at the library which is open from 10.30am to 3pm.

Councillor Mike Owen, Cabinet member for business support, tourism and culture, said:

“This event is a great opportunity to find out more about the history of Church Stretton School, which has had such a central role in the history of the town.  We are delighted that so many ex-pupils and teachers have come forward to give us their memories and records, but would welcome any further contributions on the day.”

The day is free and refreshments will be available.  For further details contact Church Stretton Library on 01694 722535, email churchstretton.library@shropshire.gov.uk
