Primary schools across Shropshire have been enjoying two days of special menus as part of British Food Fortnight 2011.

They kicked off throughout the county on Wednesday 21 September 2011 with a British- inspired menu serving delights such as beef or cheesy mashed potato-filled Yorkshire puddings and jam roly poly for afters.

This is followed on Friday 30 September 2011 by ‘make your own burger’ day where the pupils can customize their British beef, fish or bean burger with a variety of scrummy toppings.

Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for the school meals service, said:

“We are really pleased to be supporting the British Food Fortnight which helps to promote British produce and highlights the use of our locally-sourced ingredients.  Shropshire primary schoolpupils will enjoy the change to their normal menu, while learning about the benefits of buying British food.”

The British Food Fortnight is promoted by Love British Food and is the annual national celebration of the British food industry supplying information on the buying of British produce and using local and seasonal foods.

Shropshire Council’s school meals service already sources lots of its ingredients as locally as possible to provide good quality nutritious food throughout the county.  At present it provides meals to 144 primary schools in Shropshire and prides itself on finding innovate ways of introducing new menus to the pupils.
