Related topics: Leisure, culture and heritage

‘Walkers are Welcome’ is a high status national ‘badge’ scheme for towns and their surrounding area that go that extra mile to attract and make life especially good for visiting and local walkers.

There will be an introductory meeting for people to find out more about Walkers are Welcome accreditation on Tuesday 11 October at 7pm in the Guildhall on Bailey Head, Oswestry.

The benefits include:

  • Strengthening the area’s reputation for visitors enjoying the outdoors
  • Free national publicity and exposure
  • Boosting the local visitor economy
  • Major walking festivals
  • Ensuring that footpaths and facilities for walkers are well-maintained
  • Contributing to local tourism plans and attracting regeneration funding

Councillor Steve Charmley, chair of the Active Oswestry group as well as Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for health and well-being, said:-

“It is vitally important that we keep the Oswestry area at the forefront as an ‘activity’ destination.

“We hope local retailers, accommodation providers, cafes, pubs, community groups, walkers, the town council, Shropshire Council, tourism bodies, the civic society and anybody promoting walking and physical activity to come together to agree a plan of action to enable the Oswestry area to join over 50 famous walking area towns that already enjoy Walkers are Welcome status.”
