Improvements to make roads in Shrewsbury safer

Related topics: Community

Work will start on Wednesday 17 August 2011 to make Hanwood Road and Radbrook Road in Shrewsbury safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The improvements, which are expected to take around six weeks to complete, include a signalised Toucan crossing to link Crowmeole Lane with the shared pavement and cycleway on Bank Farm Road, an extended 30mph speed limit from its current location near Radbrook College to the south west of the Bank Farm Road junction and a mini-roundabout at the Bank Farm Road junction.

A speed-triggered Vehicle Activated Sign, or ‘VAS’ will also be installed on the bank between the Crowmeole Lane junction and Radbrook College and parts of the road will be resurfaced.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport, said:

“This scheme has been designed to provide a safe crossing point for children travelling from the north west of the town to the schools in Radbrook.  The crossing will also help people travelling to the hospital and college through this area by bike or on foot.  The extended speed limit is intended to improve safety for all road users along this section of Hanwood Road and the new mini-roundabout will help to support this.  The redesigned junction will also assist people turning out of Bank Farm Road on to Hanwood Road.”

The work has been planned to start following the Shrewsbury Flower Show and in the latter part of the school summer holiday in order to minimise disruption to the public.
