Teamwork enables more outdoor learning

Pupils from Martin Wilson Primary School in Shrewsbury are set to benefit from a spring clean of their school’s courtyard, providing the ideal environment for outdoor learning during the warmer weather.

Officers from 60 Squadron RAF Shawbury have been working hard over the last couple of weeks to renovate the courtyard that some of the school buildings look onto.

Successful teamwork has meant that damaging tree roots have been removed, old fencing has been taken down and the pond has been cleaned out.  Many skips have been filled, decking has been laid and the area has been beautifully landscaped.

All of this has been supported by local businesses and Shrewsbury in Bloom.  Wickes on Whitchurch Road supplied the tools and McDonalds at Battlefield provided lunch for those hard at work. Flowers used as part of the landscaping were donated by Shrewsbury in Bloom.

Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and IT, said:

“This is a great example of successful teamwork and its good to see everyone coming together to create such a wonderful learning environment for the children.”

Shrewsbury Town Councillor Jackie Brennand, Chairman of Shrewsbury in Bloom, added:

“We are delighted to have donated some plants to the school and it is fantastic that we have all been able to work together to achieve this.”

Shropshire Council introduced officers from 60 Squadron RAF Shawbury to the school after they enquired about doing some volunteer work.

The council occasionally get people approaching them as volunteers. So, if people have projects they need doing they’re encouraged to contact the Gillian Sneddon  on 01743 254928.
