New research shedding light on the history of Shifnal will be revealed at a history day of talks and walks, organised by the Friends of Shropshire Archives, at Shifnal Village Hall on Saturday 26 March 2011.

The Friends of Shropshire Archives are a dedicated group of volunteers who provide invaluable support to Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives service, including organising regular history days such as this across the county.

Shifnal has a long history dating back perhaps as far as the 7th century AD.  The day will explore various aspects of its history led by local experts and specialists.

County Archivist Mary McKenzie said: ‘This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day finding out about the long history of Shifnal and to learn more about its inhabitants.  This is a fascinating area of Shropshire that deserves to be celebrated.”

The study day will be held at Shifnal Village Hall, Aston Street, Shifnal and includes a choice of guided walks and visits to the Fire Station Heritage Centre and the church.

The day costs £3 for members of the Friends of Shropshire Archives and £7.50 for non-members.  Places are still available; for further details and to book a place, please contact Mrs Pat Kiernan on 01952 252814.
