Next stage of Heathgates roundabout improvements

The second stage of work to enhance and improve the Heathgates roundabout in Shrewsbury will begin next week.

Once complete, the work will see new landscaping on and around the island, improvements for pedestrians and cyclists and a reduction in the number and size
of signs.

The next phase of the work, which will involve earthworks and landscaping, will start in the week commencing Monday 21 February 2011, with the planting due to start on Monday 14 March 2011.

To carry out these works it will be necessary to close one of the circulatory lanes around the roundabout.

However, whilst this lane closure is in operation the opportunity will be taken to carry out some routine maintenance work to the carriageway within the roundabout.

Councillor Malcolm Price, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for planning and housing, said:

“It is inevitable that this will cause a certain amount of disruption, but we will make every effort to minimise any inconvenience.”

The improvements to the roundabout will be the first work carried out as part of Shropshire Council’s Northern Corridor Environmental Improvement Plan, a package of proposed projects to enhance the A5112 – A5191 route from Battlefield Island to Castle Foregate.

The work is funded by the Department of Communities and Local Government through the Shrewsbury Growth Point programme.

Alan Mosley, Shropshire Councillor for Castlefields and Ditherington, said:

“This is a good use of Growth Point money which will make this important entrance to town safer and much more attractive for both residents and people travelling through. I now look forward to consultations on a much needed improvement scheme for the shopping area in Ditherington.”
