Community payback team cleans College Street in Ludlow
Shropshire Council’s streetscene south west team were pleased to welcome the Probation Services’ community payback team to Ludlow on Thursday 12 January 2012.
For their second project of the year 12 offenders swept, hoed and shovelled College Street in Ludlow free of leaves, mud and litter.
30 bags of leaves, dirt and litter were collected from the back line of the street, the channel and the flagstones and cobbles in the conservation area.
As parked vehicles usually prevent the streetcleaner from accessing the street, visitors and residents alike helpfully found alternative parking for a few hours whilst work was undertaken.
The considerable amount of trampled leaves and debris accumulating on the sloping street was of concern as a potential slip hazard, as well as detracting from the beauty of the conservation area.
Other towns across the south west area have been nominated for projects. A schedule is being drawn up of work to brighten the south west area, over and above the work the council’s paid staff undertake. Future projects include the pavements around the school and Oak Meadow area of Bishop’s Castle, moss removal in Church Stretton, and leaf and debris clearance from Church Walks in Cleobury Mortimer.
Councillor Martin Bennett, Deputy Cabinet member responsible for streetscene, said:
“Voluntary labour of all descriptions makes a significant contribution to community well- being. We are really pleased to have so many people helping across the area, and welcome the Probation Service workforce’s help.”
Rosanna Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow North, said:
“Thanks to the volunteers College Street looks much better. I hope Ludlow can welcome them back later this year to work in other areas.”
