Exhibition for a proposed new traffic scheme a great success

Over 400 residents, business people and visitors went to see a proposed new traffic scheme for St Julian’s Friars in Shrewsbury during a two day exhibition held last week (Thursday 8 December and Friday 9 December 2011). 

The exhibition, which took place in one of the new retail units built as part of the development at the junction of St Julian’s Friars and St Julian’s Crescent, enabled residents interested in the proposals to find out more from local councillors and Shropshire Council staff.   

Lots of people fed back their ideas about the scheme, which include introducing a one-way system to improve access to the car park and new houses. 

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for transport, said:

“This was a fantastic turnout.  This event enabled residents to talk to our officers and local members about how the scheme could look.  As a result we’ve got some great feedback which will help to shape the scheme.” 

Andrew Bannerman, Shropshire Councillor for Quarry and Coton Hill, said:

“We had a steady stream of people on both days.  Everyone appreciated the officers taking the trouble to answer questions on the details of the scheme all day.  We have decided on an ‘experimental order’ for the traffic system, which will be reviewed after six months.  People can continue to give us their views once the scheme is in operation.”

Those who were unable to visit the exhibition can still let the council know their views, as the consultation doesn’t finish until next month (January 2012).
