Cabinet backs continued devolution discussions for Shropshire
Shropshire Council Cabinet has agreed to continue discussions with government and regional partners as the national devolution picture continues to evolve.
A report to Cabinet recommended maintaining a flexible approach that keeps options open while further work is carried out on what future arrangements could mean for the county.
The report recognises Shropshire’s rural character and the importance of maintaining strong economic relationships both eastwards towards Telford and the West Midlands and westwards through existing partnerships in Wales, including the Marches Forward Partnership.
It also supports further engagement with government and Telford & Wrekin Council while evidence is developed on the county’s future economic, infrastructure and growth opportunities.
After the meeting Shropshire Council leader Heather Kidd, explained the Cabinet decision.
She said:-
“This is about making sure Shropshire is part of the conversation and in the strongest possible position to secure investment, opportunities and a strong voice for our county. We will continue working positively with partners while putting Shropshire’s interests first and keeping residents at the heart of future discussions.”
