Urgent road repairs to continue as Multevo contract extended

Shropshire Council is to extend its highways maintenance contract with Multevo until 31 March 2027, to ensure that urgent work to repair the county’s roads following the severe winter and summer heatwaves continues.

The extension of the ‘mixed economy’ contract will enable work to be carried out without interruption while a new long-term highways maintenance contract is procured.

Under the extension Multevo will continue their existing work to repair potholes and other defects on the county’s roads, and carry out additional work resulting from the unforeseen and exceptional weather.

David Vasmer, Cabinet member for highways and waste, said:

“We are pleased to continue the current contract and in doing so ensure we continue to deliver vital maintenance and road repairs across the county. The cold and wet weather we experienced last winter resulted in a big increase in the number of potholes on our roads, and this summer’s heatwave has also taken its toll on our highways network – increasing the demand for repairs. We have delivered a significant amount of work already and I’m really pleased that we’ve agreed to extend the contract so that we will be able to continue and increase this work without any interruption or delay.

“We’ve pledged to tackle potholes and improve the county’s roads and this decision will help us to continue to do so.”

Shropshire Council is currently repairing an average of 780 potholes per week, with more than 22,000 repaired since the start of 2026.

The current ‘mixed economy’ contract delivered by Multevo was previously extended until 31 August 2026. Since then the combined impacts of the severe winter of 2025/26 and the summer 2026 heat event have significantly increased the volume of safety-critical repairs required across Shropshire.
