Renting is changing from today Friday 1 May 2026.

Reforms to the private rented sector in England are bringing in new rights and responsibilities for landlords, letting agents and tenants.

James Owen, portfolio holder for housing and leisure, said:

With the major reforms under the Renters’ Right Act coming in today, approximately 23,000 homes are now provided with greater security for their tenants.

Alongside this, there are enhanced enforcement powers for the Council and clearer responsibilities for landlords.

We at Shropshire Council are ready to ensure both tenants and landlords are well supported, protected, and ready for a fairer private rented sector.
