Gas main replacement work on Harlescott Lane, Shrewsbury

A one-way road closure – then temporary traffic lights – will be in place on Harlescott Lane in Shrewsbury from 27 April to 2 June [2026] for gas main replacement work by Cadent Gas.

Work will take place along Harlescott Lane between the junction with Vanguard Way and the junction with Harlescott Crescent. As the work will be in close proximity to the level crossing, a one way road closure will be in place from the Lancaster Road junction, preventing traffic from travelling towards Harlescott Crossroads. In conjunction with this closure, Vanguard Way will also be closed at the mini roundabout.

During the closures, fully signed diversion routes will be in place and access to residential properties and businesses will be maintained

The road closures will be in operation for the first two weeks of the work. Once operatives have completed the section of work within the closed off area, the remaining phases will be carried out under temporary traffic lights, with work continuing away from the level crossing towards Harlescott Crescent.

The temporary traffic signals will be manually controlled by a traffic management operative between 7am and 7pm each day to help minimise delays and maintain traffic flow.

Affected residents and businesses will receive advance notification, and advance warning signs will be installed on site two weeks prior to the scheme commencing to ensure road users are fully informed.

Shropshire Council has been working closely with both Cadent Gas and Network Rail to agree a method of working that minimises disruption as far as possible.

The proposed dates may be subject to change, as they are dependent on Cadent Gas obtaining the required Basic Asset Protection Agreement (BAPA) from Network Rail.

The work is being undertaken in advance of proposed highway resurfacing in the area.
