A permanent 20mph speed limit has been installed on the road from Brockton to Easthope, outside Brockton C of E Primary School, using 20mph signage and road markings.

Yellow-backed 20mph signs are now in place at the extents of the speed limit along with 20mph repeater signs, with 20mph reminders on the road surface.

The new speed limit has been implemented as part of a Shropshire Council programme under which 20mph speed restrictions are set to be introduced outside a number of Shropshire schools.

Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and economic growth, said:

“Improving safety at the school gate, and further afield, is a key priority for the new administration at Shropshire Council. We will be looking to support measures that improve the school run for families up and down the county. The 20mph limit outside Brockton Primary is just one example of efforts to make every journey safer for pupils and parents on their way to and from school.”

Marilyn Hunt, executive headteacher of the Edge Schools Federation said:

“We are delighted that the safety of all of the members of our school community and other local residents has been improved by the long-awaited introduction of a 20mph zone around our site at Brockton.”

The schools where a 20mph restriction has so far been put in place are

  • The Grove School, Market Drayton
  • The Thomas Adams School, Wem
  • The Lacon Childe School, Cleobury Mortimer
  • St Martins 3-16 Community School
  • Holy Trinity CofE Primary Academy, Oswestry

A programme of work at other schools will be confirmed in the near future.

Further information

The schools have been identified following work to determine the schools and locations where a 20mph speed restriction could deliver real benefits,  In all cases consultation has been carried out with key stakeholders including the school, local residents, the local councillor and the town/parish council.

Depending on the site the restrictions may be a signed-only 20mph limit, a variable 20mph limit that applies at certain times of the day, or a 20mph zone with traffic calming measures.

Post scheme monitoring will be carried out at all sites to assess local speed reducing impact but also the success of the wider programme.

There is no single generic approach for the introduction of a 20mph speed restriction, and site-specific characteristics will determine the level of intervention that may be required.

In all cases, there is a presumption that 20mph speed restricted areas are self-enforcing and that to achieve compliance there should be no expectation on the police to provide additional enforcement beyond their routine activity.
