A number of community representatives across Shrewsbury are coming together at a vigil on Sunday 7 April 2019 from 1pm to 3pm in The Square, Shrewsbury.

This has been initiated by the horrors of the Christchurch attack, and the feeling that there is a need to stand by the Muslim people in our town and county, as well as all other minority groups who come to Shrewsbury and Shropshire looking for a peaceful existence, or for safety and sanctuary.

Speakers will include:

  • The Imam from the local mosque
  • The Minister from the United Reform Church
  • The new Catholic Priest in Shrewsbury (yet to confirm)
  • The Pagan Society
  • Shropshire LGBT community
  • Age UK
  • Stand Up to Racism
  • Shropshire Supports Refugees

Amanda Jones, Director of Shropshire Supports Refugees, said:-

“Our event is about bringing togetherness where people have tried to divide. The Shrewsbury vigil will be a peaceful show of solidarity with our Muslim friends and other minority groups in our county.

“Please join us on Sunday on what will be a real celebration of diversity and an opportunity to contemplate and remember those who lost their lives in Christchurch.”

Clive Wright, Shropshire Council’s chief executive, added:-

“We are proud that Shropshire is a diverse and tolerant place where our communities are resilient, work together and respect each other. The appalling events that happened in Christchurch were shocking to people across the world and our thoughts are with all those affected.

“It is really heart-warming to see that Shropshire residents are holding a peaceful vigil in Shrewsbury this Sunday in a show of unity and togetherness and a celebration of diversity in Shropshire. This unity is strongly demonstrated by different faith and spiritual leaders coming together and speaking out for peace.

“This is an amazing and positive response to the terrible events in New Zealand and an opportunity to bring our communities even closer together and by doing so, show that we appropriately acknowledge this atrocity and stand up to terrorism.”
