New exhibition opens at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery celebrating Antarctica

The doors to Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery’s much anticipated new exhibition, Antarctica: Life in a hostile land, are now open.

Antarctica: Life in a hostile land allows you to look at people’s relationship with the most hostile continent on Earth from a range of perspectives giving you a thrilling and immersive experience.

From a 360° virtual reality tour of the UK’s Halley VI research station to inspiring photos by Ben Osborne, and original Antarctic video footage to equipment and mementos lent by Shropshire’s Antarctic veterans and objects associated with Sir Ernest Shackleton himself, this exhibition gives you a must see full Antarctic experience.

The exhibition has something for people of all ages and offers a great experience for the family.

You can visit Antarctica: Life in a hostile land, from Monday 5 June until Sunday 17 September 2017.

Phil Scoggins, Interpretation Officer at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, said:

“Antarctica: Life in a hostile land is the culmination of 12 months’ work with partners including the British Antarctic Survey and Scott Polar Research Institute and we couldn’t be more proud of the final product.

 

“We have created a fascinating exhibition that allows you to experience Antarctica with all of the senses and even feel like you’re in the continent itself. I’d encourage everyone to get to Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery at the Music Hall and not miss out.”

To add to the Antarctic theme at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery this summer, a series of fascinating talks are being given by the likes of celebrated wildlife photographer Ben Osborne and Antarctic veteran Jonathan Walton, which are sure to capture the imagination.

This exciting exhibition has been developed in partnership with the British Antarctic Survey, Scott Polar Research Institute, National Museum of Wales, The Severn Partnership Ltd, Seeable Ltd, and Orangeleaf Systems Ltd.
