Cabinet agrees review of road layout outside Shrewsbury station
Shropshire Council’s Cabinet has agreed to a comprehensive review of the current road layout outside Shrewsbury railway station, with a decision about the preferred alternative option set to be made in December.
In July [2026] Cabinet considered the recommendations of the council’s Station Gyratory Task and Finish Group, and the economy and environment scrutiny committee.
At their meeting today (5 August 2026] Cabinet agreed that technical work will be commissioned to undertake a comprehensive review of the current layout and further develop alternative options. This work will focus particularly on; the existing arrangement; the introduction of a shared-use bus, taxi and cycle facility; and reverting to two traffic lanes.
It will include a programme of technical assessment and stakeholder and public engagement to enable a fully informed future decision to be made on the long-term configuration of the station gyratory.
A key outcome of the work will be the development of viable options into mature proposals, with rationale given where any option is deemed non-viable. This would be supported by clear evidence on safety, accessibility, traffic impacts, public transport performance, active travel objectives, costs, risks, funding implications and compliance with grant requirements.
Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and regeneration, said:
“It is important that any future changes are the right ones and do not cause unintended consequences. The purpose of this commission is not to predetermine an outcome, but to establish a robust and evidence-based process that allows Cabinet to compare realistic and deliverable options before making a final decision later this year about the best way forward.”
At their meeting in December 2026 Cabinet will consider the review’s final recommendations and decide the preferred option. If Cabinet approves a preferred option, detailed design could begin after their December meeting, with the aim to carry out statutory consultation for any proposed traffic regulation orders as early as possible in the new year, followed by any on-street changes.

The review will be delivered through six phases:
- Review of existing evidence, monitoring data and safety information.
- Development and refinement of options.
- Technical assessment of shortlisted schemes.
- Stakeholder engagement.
- A 21-day non statutory public engagement exercise.
- Production of a final technical report and Cabinet decision brief.
Timescales:
- August to September [2026]: Cabinet decision, agreement of scope and commission commencement. Development and refinement of options (to include consolidation of existing evidence, monitoring data and safety information and option development).
- September to October 2026: Technical assessments and option shortlisting.
- October to November 2026: Stakeholder engagement and 21-day, non-statutory public engagement plus analysis of responses. This is informal/non-statutory engagement only and would not replace any future statutory consultation required as part of implementation.
- November 2026: Preparation of final reporting and recommendations.
- December 2026: Cabinet consideration of the final recommendations and determination of the preferred option, if any, to progress to detailed design.
