Eminent academics and historians brought the battles, campaigns, tactics, personalities and armies of the English Civil War into sight at an event hosted by University Centre Shrewsbury.
One of the world’s leading publishers of military history – Helion & Company Ltd – chose the town’s iconic Rowley’s House building and University Centre Shrewsbury base as the venue for its first English Civil War Conference on Saturday 19 September 2015.
A range of papers was shared throughout the day, including a lecture by Jonathon Worton on “That Honest and Valiant Committee in Shropshire: The Parliamentarian War Effort in Shropshire during the English Civil War, 1642 to 1646”.
More than 50 people attended the event which also included a pop-up bookshop as well as stands hosted by The Pike & Shot Society and The Battlefields Trust.
University Centre Shrewsbury Deputy Provost, Paul Kirkbright said:
“We were extremely proud to host this major English Civil War Conference as part of a range of events for the public to enjoy at University Centre Shrewsbury.”
The event also saw the launch of the latest book in Helion & Company Ltd’s acclaimed Century of the Soldier series “Reconstructing the New Model Army. Volume 1. Regimental Lists April 1645 to May 1649” by Professor Malcolm Wanklyn.
Publisher Duncan Rogers of Helion & Company Ltd added:
“I would like to congratulate my Commissioning Editor Charles Singleton on organising a superb programme of papers and talks, which were well-received by English Civil War enthusiasts and experts alike.
“This was our first major English Civil War Conference, and I was delighted and hugely encouraged to see Rowley’s House full to capacity, with all tickets having been sold. We would like to sincerely thank our hosts for affording our guests a warm welcome in what was once again a superb and highly appropriate venue.”
