Sports organisations team up with University Centre Shrewsbury

More than 30 sports organisations from across Shropshire and further afield were brought together to discuss opportunities to work with students and staff at University Centre Shrewsbury.
Representatives from clubs covering a range of sports, including hockey, squash, archery, swimming, rugby, cycling, rowing, football and basketball, looked at how they can get involved in University Centre Shrewsbury activities and how the institution can contribute to sport and recreation in the county.
Members of recreational clubs and school and college staff also took part in the University Centre Shrewsbury sport and physical activity engagement evening yesterday (Monday 23 March 2015), at Shrewsbury Town Football Club.
The event was run in partnership between University Centre Shrewsbury and Energize Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin – the county sports partnership.
Attendees discussed how they could link with the University Centre through the extra-curricular student experience, for example, by running sessions for students, and through the courses, in ways such as providing student placements and guest lecturing. University Centre Shrewsbury is offering undergraduate courses in Sport Management and Exercise and Health and a postgraduate course in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
Representatives also talked about how University Centre Shrewsbury student and staff volunteers could support community sports and play groups, work together to create new opportunities, and how the institution can bring more talent and expertise into the county to bolster Shropshire’s sporting life.
Paul Kirkbright, University Centre Shrewsbury Deputy Provost said:
“We’re working with Energize to ensure that our students can make the most of what is currently on offer, and explore opportunities to develop new sports facilities, clubs, teams, support and services for both students and the community.
“We want to offer first-class sports facilities and services, a safe and welcoming sporting environment, a high level of coaching and support, develop links with local sports clubs and national governing bodies, and promote sport within the University Centre and the wider community.”
Chris Child, Chief Executive, Energize Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, said:
“The development of University Centre Shrewsbury is very exciting for Shrewsbury and Shropshire, and that’s why we at Energize have been keen to support its establishment.
“We believe it will not only bring young people and their enthusiasm for an active lifestyle, which will boost clubs and leisure businesses, but we also expect the academic side to benefit the sport and exercise industry in the area.”
Simon Evitts from Embrace PE and Shrewsbury Rugby Club, speaking at the event, added:
“The meeting and information given has been really beneficial. It’s a great opportunity for us to work with the University Centre and students. There are very exciting times ahead with University Centre Shrewsbury.”
