County solicitors to sponsor “Secret Egypt” exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery
Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to announce that leading Shropshire solicitors Lanyon Bowdler are to become their first corporate partner, sponsoring the venue’s next major exhibition “Secret Egypt – Unravelling Truth from Myth”. The exhibition, which aims to challenge our preconceptions about Ancient Egypt, opens on Saturday 24 January 2015 and runs until 26 April 2015 in the Museum’s Special Exhibition Gallery.
Last year Lanyon Bowdler, which has branch offices all around Shropshire, held a very successful soiree for customers and staff at the Museum & Art Gallery.
Peter Flint, senior partner with Lanyon Bowdler, said:
“The transformation of the Music Hall into a fabulous new heritage and cultural venue for the county is a story that we want to be very much part of. The new “Secret Egypt” exhibition is an event we are delighted to be associated with and we will be helping to promote it through our network of offices throughout Shropshire.
“I am sure it will be popular with local residents and visitors. We are very keen to support local ventures like this which add to the cultural scene in the county.”
Supported by the Arts Council, “Secret Egypt” is a touring exhibition by the Herbert Museum & Art Gallery in partnership with Birmingham Museums Trust. The exhibition consists of 150 artefacts brought together from diverse collections around the country and has been touring the UK since 2011. It has proved immensely popular wherever it has been displayed, attracting over 37,000 visitors in Coventry alone.
Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member for visitor economy, said:
“I am really pleased with this development, and on behalf of the council I am delighted with the support being offered by Lanyon Bowdler, which will enable us to inform more people about this wonderful exhibition. The new Museum & Art Gallery has already made a significant contribution to Shropshire’s visitor economy and the staging of major exhibitions is one of its key successes.”
Additional Information
“Secret Egypt – Unravelling Truth From Myth”
The exhibition runs from 24 January to 26 April at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, The Square, Shrewsbury SY1 1LH. Closed Mondays until Easter. Opening hours 10am to 4.30pm.
A collection of thought-provoking archeological evidence will be on display, as well as highlights including artistic interpretations of the famous pharaohs and a simulation of a tomb chapel and burial chamber.
Among the 150 objects in the exhibition are ceramics, jewellery, statues, coffins and animal and human mummies. These have been curated to address popular modern misconceptions, examining the science behind the mummification process and evidence of curses in ancient Egyptian society, and dispelling science fiction explanations that link the building of the pyramids to extra-terrestrial life.
