There was intense competition at the Shropshire Boccia Final this morning, a game similar to bowls or pétanque. Six teams had made it through from the Area Heats in Ludlow, Oswestry & Shrewsbury to compete for the County Cup.

The annual tournament is organised by Shropshire RCC’s Wise & Well Team and involves community Boccia clubs that have set up over the last four years. The Final required each team to play five matches and the total scores determined the winners. The Sports students from Shrewsbury College refereed the matches and kept score.

Councillor Lee Chapman, Shropshire Council Cabinet member for Adult Services, watched the competition develop during the morning and presented the medals. He congratulated all the teams, saying:

“Well done to everyone! I know how hard you have all worked to achieve this standard of play. I have overheard many of you swapping contact details so that you can arrange ‘friendly’ matches but, having seen how seriously you have taken today’s competition, I hope these will be friendly!”

The final results were:

Gold medallists and winners of the County Cup were The Recycled Teenagers from Longleat Close, Minsterley with 51 points. Silver medals went to the Clee Hill Rebels A team with 37 points and Bronze Medals to the Royal Musketeers with 32 points. The other teams were Stan’s Stars with 21, John’s Jewels with 17 points (both from Llanymynech Good Companions) and Bishops Castle’s team from Grange Road were sixth with 12 points.

Derrick Goodall, from Lindale Court, came as a spectator since his team narrowly missed making it into the Final. He thanked Shrewsbury College and the students for running the Shrewsbury Heat and the Final and presented them with chocolates. Lee Chapman also awarded a Certificate to each of the students who had taken part.

At the end of the competition, Daphne Simmons, Shropshire RCC’s Wise & Well Team Manager said:

“I am delighted that the teams from around the county were able to come together to make this a splendid annual tournament. I am looking forward to next year already!”
