Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery is joining in the national Heritage Open Days celebration by giving visitors a free preview of its new art exhibition this Sunday (14 September), when access to the Museum & Art Gallery will be free to everyone from 10am until 5pm.

The ‘Exposed – the body in art’ exhibition reveals a range of different responses to the human body, and covers 500 years of paintings, drawings and sculptures from around the world.

It is centred around Edward Burne-Jones’ 1878 Pygmalion series, which is used to set out the five themes for exploration. The exhibition includes almost thirty works by artists including Auguste Rodin, Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud.

The works have been loaned by Birmingham Museums Trust with financial support from the Arts Council of England.

Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s Deputy Cabinet member responsible for visitor economy, said:

“I am delighted that we are able not only to give people a free visit to view the restoration of the Music Hall and medieval Vaughan’s Mansion, but also to offer a preview of this wonderful new art exhibition.”

After the free preview the ‘Exposed’ exhibition will be open from Monday 15 September 2014 until Sunday 4 January 2015 as part of the normal admission to the Museum & Art Gallery.
