Pay as you go cars have arrived in Shrewsbury

Four new fuel-efficient Fords arrived in Shrewsbury this week and are available for businesses and individuals to use on a pay as you go basis.

It costs £25 to join the scheme, and journeys are then charged per hour and per mile.  The charges cover all the overheads, making this a convenient and economic option for people who do a low annual mileage, or for businesses who only need occasional use of a vehicle.

Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for transport, said:

“Shropshire Council succeeded in winning £5m of Government funding through the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, for a range of projects that support the local economy and reduce carbon.

“We are delighted to be able to set up this innovative scheme, which is already attracting lots of interest in Shrewsbury and Ludlow.  If the scheme is a success in these areas, there is potential for it to expand to other Shropshire towns.”

A new social enterprise, Shropshire Car Club CIC, has been set up to manage the cars.

The cars will also be on show in The Square in Shrewsbury on Friday 15 March and Saturday 30 March, and information leaflets will be available in libraries and other public places from Monday 11 March.
