Shropshire’s tourism businesses and attractions are gearing up for a new season by getting together to update skills and knowledge and gather new information about attractions and activities in 2013.

Two tourism industry events are being held during English Tourism Week (Saturday 16 March 2013 – Sunday 24 March 2013) and Shrewsbury, the county town, sees the opening of a multi-million pound new hotel.

Museum Marketing Training Day, 19 March

Staff and volunteers from museums and heritage attractions in Shropshire and across The Marches will be gathering at the Museum of Iron in Coalbrookdale on Tuesday 19 March.  The event is aimed at improving skills in design, use of social media, working with the Arts Council, consumer marketing, and making the most of local and national media contacts.

The event is organised by Shropshire Council’s visitor economy team and Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, and funded by the Arts Council’s Renaissance Strategic Fund. Places are free to staff of, and volunteers with marketing responsibilities at, museums and heritage attractions.  Applications for spaces need to be made via email to helen.westwood@ironbridge.org.uk or by phone on 01952 435900.

Shropshire Hills and Ludlow leaflet swap-shop and information day, 21 March 2013

Accommodation providers and Visitor Information Centre staff from around the Shropshire Hills and Ludlow are being invited to a Leaflet Swap-shop and Information Day on Thursday 21 March.  The venue is The Barn at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, near Church Stretton (signed off the A49 south of Church Stretton).

The leaflet swap-shop opens at 10am and closes at 12.30pm.  There will be up to 20 attractions and other tourism facilities from whom to collect leaflets.

Lunch will be available for £5.  It will consist of a sandwich, piece of cake, fruit, and there will be tea and coffee all morning.  For those who would like lunch it needs to be pre-booked, and paid for with cash on the day, so just let Adam Piggott at Shropshire Council know by 18 March.  Email Adam at adam.piggott@shropshire.gov.uk

At 1.45pm there will be an information session with presentations from the Shropshire Hills and Ludlow Destination Partnership on current issues, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service about fire safety, and Shropshire Council about food safety.  The session is free to attend, but spaces should be booked by emailing Adam Piggott or calling 01743 252531

Tim King, Shropshire Council’s tourism officer, commented:

“It’s great to see Shropshire’s tourism businesses supporting English Tourism Week by coming along to events designed to help them.  I’m also delighted to see a new multi-million hotel development come to fruition in Shrewsbury.  This will bring many more visitors to explore our beautiful county town and the rest of Shropshire around it.”
